SEO Competitor Analysis Canada | How to Find & Close the Gap

·

Knowing what your competitors are doing in search is not optional — it’s the foundation of an effective SEO strategy. For Canadian businesses, competitor analysis reveals exactly which keywords are driving revenue to your rivals, which backlinks are boosting their authority, and where their content leaves gaps you can exploit.

What SEO Competitor Analysis Actually Tells You

Most businesses think about competitors in terms of products or pricing. SEO competitor analysis is different — your SEO competitors are whoever ranks above you for your target keywords, whether or not you compete with them commercially.

A Toronto accounting firm might discover their biggest SEO competitors include a Canadian tax software company, a national accounting association, and a Vancouver-based firm — none of whom are direct business competitors, but all of whom occupy rankings the Toronto firm needs.

Knowing this changes your strategy completely.

Step 1: Identify Your Real SEO Competitors

Start with your 5–10 most important keywords and note who ranks on page 1 for each. Use Google Search Console (filter to Canada) and search Google.ca directly.

Look for patterns — which domains appear repeatedly across your target keywords? Those are your primary SEO competitors.

For a Toronto B2B company, your competitors list typically includes:

  • Direct local competitors (other Toronto firms in your category)
  • National players with strong domain authority
  • Industry associations and publications
  • Content-heavy sites targeting informational queries
  • Each type requires a different response in your strategy.

    Step 2: Keyword Gap Analysis

Keyword gap analysis reveals which keywords your competitors rank for that you don’t. These are your most immediate opportunities.

    Free approach:

  • Use Google Search Console to see what you currently rank for
  • Manually search your competitor’s brand + service keywords on Google.ca
  • Note which content pieces rank for what you want to rank for
  • With tools (Ahrefs, Semrush):

  • Enter your domain and 2–3 competitor domains
  • Filter to keywords where competitors rank in positions 1–20 but you don’t rank at all
  • Sort by estimated Canadian search volume
  • Prioritise keywords where competitors rank 5–15 (they haven’t fully won — you can compete)
  • What to do with gap keywords:
Create dedicated content targeting each gap. If a competitor ranks #3 for “B2B SEO services Ontario” with a thin 600-word page, a comprehensive 1,500-word guide on the same topic gives you a realistic shot at outranking them.

    Step 3: Content Quality Analysis

Identify your competitors’ top-ranking pages and analyse what makes them rank. For each competitor page:

  • Length: How comprehensive is it? (Word count is not a ranking factor, but thoroughness is)
  • Structure: Does it use clear H2/H3 hierarchy? FAQ sections? Tables?
  • Freshness: When was it last updated? Recently updated content often outranks stale content
  • E-E-A-T signals: Author credentials shown? Original research or data? Client proof?
  • Internal linking: How is it connected to the rest of their site?
  • Your goal is not to copy — it’s to understand what Google is rewarding in your niche and then do it better.

    Step 4: Backlink Gap Analysis

Backlinks remain one of the strongest ranking signals. Competitor backlink analysis reveals two things: how strong their authority is, and where you can get similar links.

    Key questions:

  • What is their Domain Rating/Authority vs yours?
  • Which sites link to them that don’t link to you?
  • Are there industry directories, publications, or association sites where competitors are listed but you aren’t?
  • Action from backlink gaps:

  • Submit to directories where competitors are listed (start with your backlink submission pack)
  • Pitch publications that have featured competitors for expert commentary
  • Create content that earns the types of links competitors have (resource pages, data, guides)
  • Step 5: Technical Gap Analysis

Sometimes rankings are won not on content quality but on technical execution. Compare your site against competitors on:

  • Page speed: Use PageSpeed Insights on their top-ranking pages vs yours
  • Core Web Vitals: Check CrUX data in GSC
  • Schema markup: View source on their pages — what structured data are they using?
  • Site structure: How do they organise their service pages, blog, and location pages?
  • Mobile experience: Browse their site on mobile vs yours
  • A technically superior site with equivalent content will often outrank a technically weaker site over time.

    Monitoring Competitors Ongoing

Competitor analysis isn’t a one-time exercise. Set up monitoring:

  • Google Alerts for competitor brand names
  • Monthly ranking checks on your 10 most important keywords
  • Quarterly content audits — what new pages have competitors published?
  • Backlink monitoring — are competitors acquiring links at a faster pace than you?
  • In a competitive market like Toronto, a competitor who has invested in SEO for 12 months without you noticing can be very difficult to displace. Staying aware of movements lets you respond before the gap becomes a chasm.

    Turning Analysis Into Action

The output of competitor analysis should be a prioritised action list:

  • Quick wins: Keywords where you rank 5–15 and competitors rank 1–3 — optimise existing pages
  • Content gaps: Topics competitors cover well that you don’t — create new pages
  • Backlink opportunities: Directories and publications listing competitors — submit your site
  • Technical fixes: Any area where competitors are measurably faster or better structured
  • Revisit this list quarterly and track progress.
